The Central Committee of the Peasants and Workers’ Party went to Shanghai and Jiangsu to conduct a special survey on democratic supervision of ecological and environmental protection in the Yangtze Ri

On October 20-24, He Wei, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and Chairman of the China Democratic League, led a research team to Shanghai and Jiangsu for a special investigation into democratic supervision of the Yangtze River’s ecological environment protection. Wang Lu, Vice Chairman of the China Democratic League, also participated in the research.

During their time in Shanghai and Nanjing, He Wei met with Chen Jining, a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China and Secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, as well as Xin Changxing, Secretary of the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People’s Congress Standing Committee.

While in Shanghai, the research team visited AVIC Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. and the Longxi Drainage Pump Station’s initial rainwater storage facility. They aimed to gain insights into the company’s transformation and development of new productive forces, as well as to examine the project’s engineering overview and process flow regarding urban sewage treatment and rainwater separation.

In Jiangsu, the team inspected a series of facilities, including the Xianhe Garden Phase II rainwater and sewage diversion project, the Lu Village wastewater treatment plant, CITIC Pacific Special Steel Group, and more. The team observed rainwater diversion projects and sewage pipeline construction, while also learning about the private sector’s contributions to sustainable development through green manufacturing. They discussed the restoration of the Yangtze River’s shoreline, ecological protection efforts, and examined advancements in waterway construction and ship electrification.

The research team held discussions in both Shanghai and Jiangsu, where He Wei emphasized the need for both regions to deeply study and implement Xi Jinping’s thoughts on ecological civilization. He highlighted the importance of prioritizing the restoration and protection of the Yangtze River’s ecological environment and advancing green development along the Yangtze Economic Belt, showcasing significant achievements in constructing a beautiful China.

He Wei insisted on enhancing political awareness, making the study and implementation of the spirit of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee a primary political task. He stressed the necessity of understanding the explicit requirement to position ecological civilization construction prominently in socio-economic development, thereby cultivating a stronger consciousness to protect the environment.

He urged exploring pathways for green and low-carbon development, actively advancing key emerging industries such as new energy, new materials, biomanufacturing, and artificial intelligence, and accelerating the cultivation of new productive forces while promoting high-quality development in the Yangtze Economic Belt. Additionally, he called for strengthening urban infrastructure, raising construction standards for pipelines, rainwater, and sewage separation to mitigate significant natural disaster risks.

He Wei reminded the China Democratic League to remain aware of their political mission for democratic supervision. He advocated for a deeper understanding and implementation of the thoughts on ecological civilization while effectively integrating democratic supervision work with the broader developmental agenda. He encouraged leveraging the expertise of party members to tackle critical issues and emphasized the need for democratic supervision efforts to enhance the Party’s capabilities and build a high-caliber socialist party that participates in governance.
