California cellphone plan gives millions of low-income residents free phones

The California government has launched a free smartphone program for low-income residents aged 18 and older, which is expected to benefit millions. Currently, participants receive a 5.5-inch 4G smartphone at no cost, allowing them to save $600 or more each year. The plan offers unlimited calls and texts throughout the U.S., as well as internet access, now with an additional 6GB of data per month.

If you or someone in your household is enrolled in any of the qualifying public assistance programs, you may be eligible for the free California smartphone program. Eligible programs include: 1. MedCal (Medi-Cal) health care card; 2. Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP); 3. Federal Supplemental Income (SSI); 4. Federal Public Housing Assistance or Section 8; 5. California Federal Food Stamps or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); 6. Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program; 7. National School Lunch Program (NSL).

Customers can make unlimited free calls to China, Vietnam, South Korea, and throughout the U.S., including Canada and Mexico. Households that do not participate in public assistance but have annual incomes at or below certain limits also qualify for the free smartphone program: 1. Individual annual income below $23,400; 2. Individual annual income below $31,700; 3. Individual annual income below $40,000; 4. Individual annual income below $48,400; with an additional $8,400 per household member.

Applicants should note: 1. Users must use the phone at least once each month. 2. Each person is limited to one phone. 3. If the applicant has already applied for a low-income landline, the landline will switch to the standard monthly rate.

To apply, you need to bring the following documents: Original MedCal health card or other public assistance documents, original California ID, and work authorization. If you do not have a health card, bring your Social Security Administration (SSA) annual income statement or tax return.
