Fire was successfully collected for the 12th National Ethnic Traditional Sports Games

On September 30, 2023, we had the chance to speak with representatives in Sanya, China, about the recent torch collection ceremony for the 12th National Traditional Sports Games for Ethnic Minorities, which took place the day before. This event marked the official kickoff of the games.

This year’s torch collection embraced a “mountain and sea connection” theme, utilizing multiple channels that highlight elements from mountains, seas, and technology. This approach symbolizes the harmonious coexistence and mutual support among various ethnic groups from highlands, grasslands, and coastal areas.

The ceremony at the torch collection site in Wuzhishan opened with a mesmerizing performance titled “Mother is China.” Dressed in traditional attire, representatives from 56 different ethnic groups gradually gathered at the center of the venue to dance. Three young women, carrying Li pottery vessels, accompanied by six other representatives, moved rhythmically toward the torch collection device. These vessels, filled with water from the Changhua River, Nandu River, and Wanquan River—collectively known as the “Three Rivers’ Water”—symbolize the harmonious relationship between the Hainan people and nature. As the “Three Rivers’ Water” was gently poured into the device, a firing mechanism was ignited, bringing the “Ecological Fire” to life.

At the ocean collection site, the blue flames of combustible ice mirrored the sky, creating a stunning visual where “ice” met “fire.” This remarkable scene showcased the synergy of green technology and human innovation. A torchbearer stepped forward to ignite the torch with the collected flames, successfully capturing the “Technological Fire.”

During the ceremony in Sanya, one participant raised high some ripened rice ears and placed them into the torch collection device, symbolizing the continuity of life and hope for the future as the flames flickered to life.

The successful conclusion of the torch collection ceremony represents the fusion of “Ecological Fire,” “Technological Fire,” and “Fire of Hope,” culminating in a unified “Heartfelt Flame.” It’s worth mentioning that the torch lighting and relay launch ceremony is scheduled for October 9 at the picturesque Tianya Haijiao in Sanya.
