Infineon lays off more than 100 employees in Silicon Valley without warning_2

In an interview regarding the recent layoffs in Silicon Valley, representatives from Infineon Technologies Americas announced plans to reduce its workforce by 105 employees at their South Bay facility, effective October 11th. This decision reflects a larger trend of job cuts impacting tech companies in the region, as reported by Mercury News. Recent documents from the California government reveal that over 100 job positions are expected to be eliminated across the area.

When asked about the implications of these layoffs, a spokesperson from the state’s Employment Development Department (EDD) indicated that the reductions are primarily concentrated among major semiconductor firms, including Infineon and Hanwha Vision America. The layoffs specifically affect employees in San Jose, Santa Clara, and Milpitas.

Additionally, Amyris, a biotech company that experienced bankruptcy in December 2023 and emerged from reorganization in May 2024, has also announced significant layoffs in Emeryville.

A closer examination of the recent WARN notices submitted to the EDD highlights the following layoffs within the Bay Area’s technology and biotech landscapes:

– Infineon Technologies Americas is set to eliminate 105 jobs, with 104 of those in San Jose and one in Milpitas.
– Hanwha Vision America, which offers cloud services for video surveillance, will let go of 23 employees in Santa Clara.
– Amyris plans to cut 50 positions in Emeryville as part of its restructuring process.

According to the WARN notices, Infineon’s layoffs will take effect on October 11th, followed by Amyris on December 2nd, and Hanwha Vision America on December 4th. All companies have confirmed that these layoffs will be permanent.

From 2022 to 2024, Silicon Valley tech firms have laid off over 47,500 workers throughout the Bay Area. However, amidst these reductions, there remains a robust hiring trend in sectors deemed promising, such as artificial intelligence, fintech, healthtech, cybersecurity, and green energy, with thousands of new positions created in the region.
