The 21st China Tibet Mountaineering Conference 2024 opened successfully in Lhasa

On October 2, 2024, the 21st China Tibet Mountaineering Conference officially kicked off at the Yangbajing high-altitude training base in Lhasa. This year’s conference features an exciting lineup of activities, including the Luodui Peak climbing expedition, the Tibet Outdoor Camping Hiking Conference, and the Tibet Autonomous Region Natural Rock Climbing Open Competition. Additionally, mountain biking enthusiasts will have a chance to test their skills in the challenging Snow Kula Peak Mountain Biking Cross-Country Race.

Lai Min, the deputy director of the Tibet Autonomous Region Sports Bureau, underscored the significance of harnessing Tibet’s unique mountain outdoor resources and talent to foster the growth of the mountaineering and outdoor sports industry. He explained, “Our goal is to expedite the establishment of a premier mountain outdoor sports region. By organizing events like this conference, the ski-mountaineering exchange conference, and the outdoor hiking conference, as well as the Snow Kula Peak mountain biking challenge, we aim to create a dynamic platform for sharing mountain outdoor sports experiences, attracting enthusiasts from all over the country.”

Since its inception in 2001, the China Tibet Mountaineering Conference has evolved through twenty successful sessions, shifting from a strictly professional high-altitude mountaineering focus to a more inclusive approach that encourages public engagement in mountaineering, fosters commercial exchanges, and introduces various outdoor sports, cultural experiences, and skill training. Over the past twenty years, nearly 2,000 climbing enthusiasts from across the nation have realized their dreams of summiting snow-capped peaks and embarked on their own journeys to conquer the world’s highest mountains.

Gao Heyuan, a student from China University of Geosciences, shared his enthusiasm about participating in this year’s Luodui Peak climbing expedition. He commented, “I major in mountaineering, and everyone from our school is incredibly passionate about climbing. We’ve always heard that Lhasa is a paradise for outdoor sports, and we’ve eagerly anticipated coming here. Our climbing team’s collective goal is to reach the summit.”
