Headless horseman, jungle animals… Pumpkin lanterns are -funny- for Halloween

As October settles in New York, the crisp autumn air ushers in vibrant foliage and an unmistakable Halloween spirit. Among the vast array of seasonal festivities, Pumpkin Nights has emerged as a must-see attraction. Often referred to as “Jack O’ Lanterns,” these festive pumpkins are transformed into chilling figures, including zombies, vampires, and witches, providing a spine-tingling prelude to Halloween.

This year marks a significant milestone—the 20th anniversary of “The Great Jack O’ Lantern Blaze,” a celebrated pumpkin display that elevates pumpkin carving to an art form. Held each fall in the Hudson Valley and on Long Island, the event has expanded dramatically this year. Attendees can not only marvel at breathtaking pumpkin sculptures but also enjoy state-of-the-art lighting effects and musical experiences, making it perfect for family outings.

A key highlight is the Hudson Valley venue, Van Cortlandt Manor, an 18th-century estate that provides a stunning autumn backdrop. Guests can wander through gardens adorned with handcrafted lanterns, stroll past the historic brick ferry house, and catch a glimpse of the Headless Horseman. Meanwhile, on Long Island, the exhibit at Old Bethpage Village Restoration—a sprawling 209-acre living history museum—invites visitors to explore pumpkin-lined paths amid 19th-century buildings and barns, all set against a surreal landscape featuring over 7,000 glowing pumpkins.

Tickets for both the Hudson Valley and Long Island events are now available. The Hudson Valley display will run through November 17, while the Long Island event wraps up on November 3. For further details, attendees can visit pumpkinblaze.org.

In the Bronx, the Bronx Zoo is gearing up to celebrate Halloween with “Pumpkin Nights,” an enchanting event showcasing more than 5,000 animal-themed jack-o’-lanterns. Following a successful debut last year, this year’s installment promises even more stunning designs.

What distinguishes “Pumpkin Nights” from other pumpkin exhibits is its unique focus on ecology. The display will recreate various animal habitats, including the Amazon rainforest, the Himalayas, the Congo rainforest, deep-sea environments, and the African savannah. Visitors can expect a mystical journey enhanced with smoke machines, bubble effects, and vibrant lighting.

It’s important to note that while the event takes place within the zoo, animal exhibits are not included; guests wishing to see the animals must visit during daytime hours. “Pumpkin Nights” will be open Thursday through Sunday until October 27. Additionally, the New York Botanical Garden is debuting a new Halloween-themed light trail inspired by Tim Burton’s classic “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” This special event runs through November 30 and features over 8,300 square feet of interactive projections, smart LED lighting, and 3D printed sculptures, bringing beloved characters to life. Beyond pumpkin displays, New York offers a multitude of other Halloween-themed activities waiting to be discovered. Retailers like Costco and Trader Joe’s are already stocking pumpkins, enabling families to dive into the fun of pumpkin carving at home and embrace the creative spirit of the fall season.
