Ancient charm and new trends interweave, Nanchang unlocks a new experience of lakeside play during holidays

At a recent event on Supu Island in Nanchang, Jiangxi, visitor Yang Xiaoyan from Guangxi shared her enthusiasm after witnessing the water-based fire pot performance for the very first time. “Experiencing this ancient and mysterious art up close was truly astonishing. I hope more people get the chance to appreciate its unique charm,” she remarked.

The fire pot performance is a nationally recognized intangible cultural heritage, and this past National Day holiday, it was spectacularly paired with a flying water sport at Nanchang’s Bayi Park. The show, likened to a phoenix rising from the ashes, captivated the audience with its breathtaking display. Under the night sky, performers clad in fireproof suits leapt and twirled with glowing fire pots at the water’s surface. The vibrant flames danced in tandem with the dynamic shadows of the pots, creating an enchanting spectacle reminiscent of “fire trees and silver flowers,” symbolizing the community’s hopes for a beautiful future. This mesmerizing visual display was a nightly highlight during the park’s inaugural “Su Garden Meeting” cultural tourism festival.

Supu Island, a peaceful oasis surrounded by the waters of Donghu Lake, provides a tranquil retreat from the bustling attractions of Bayi Park. Historically recognized as one of the “Ten Scenic Spots of Yuzhang,” this area is thought to have been a haven for the Song dynasty scholar Su Yunqing.

This year, early renovations at Bayi Park have significantly improved its layout and introduced new recreational opportunities by the lakeside. Supu Island has seen a remarkable transformation. Traditional boats are moored alongside lotus ponds, gentle mist rises to the soothing sounds of guqin melodies, and visitors dressed in Hanfu reflect contemplatively, as if they’ve journeyed into a picturesque southern water town. New attractions like the Su Garden Café, a water sports club, and a pet playground harmoniously blend ancient elegance with modern trends, attracting considerable attention.

During the National Day celebrations, the park also featured a variety of traditional cultural activities, including performances on watercraft, national ethnic dances, tea ceremonies, calligraphy exhibitions, and toss pot games. “As night descends, visitors can enjoy boat rides illuminated by lanterns and moonlight, soaking in the stunning scenery alongside special performances. It provides a truly unique nighttime experience,” said a spokesperson from the Nanchang Baihuazhou Scenic Area Affairs Center. The aim is to encourage guests to engage with Bayi Park beyond its scenic beauty, inviting them to uncover new adventures and surprises in a high-quality tourism experience.
