On October 9, President Joe Biden held a 30-minute phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, marking their first interaction in nearly two months. The primary focus of the call was Israel’s plans for retaliation against Iran in light of escalating tensions. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre described the discussion as “direct and productive,” noting that Vice President Kamala Harris also joined the call.

In a subsequent statement, the White House reaffirmed Biden’s strong commitment to Israel’s security while condemning Iran’s ballistic missile attack on Israel that took place on October 1.

During the briefing, Jean-Pierre acknowledged that although there are differences between the two leaders, they addressed these disagreements with an open mindset. She emphasized Biden’s call for Israel’s response to Iran to be “proportional,” highlighting the caution advised regarding any further military actions.

The White House indicated that Biden and Netanyahu agreed to stay in close contact in the days ahead, whether directly or through their teams.

According to U.S. officials familiar with the conversation, the bulk of the discussion revolved around Israel’s retaliation plans for Iran, along with potential future strategies concerning Hezbollah in Lebanon. Despite the historically tense dynamic between Biden and Netanyahu, sources reported that the atmosphere of the call was amicable.
