This year, Brooklyn’s largest art celebration, the Gowanus Open Studios, is set to kick off its 28th edition on October 19th and 20th. This free event will showcase the works of hundreds of artists and art organizations, including a notable presence of Asian American artists, such as the Chinese artist Xiangjie Rebecca Wu, who will be among the featured participants.
Organized by the nonprofit arts organization Arts Gowanus, the event aims to provide a platform for artists to exhibit their work. With over 380 artists and organizations confirmed this year, the open studios will take place in spacious old factories, warehouses, and studio buildings. Attendees can expect to meet the artists themselves, who will share insights into their creative processes, fostering deep connections among the artistic community.
During the event, visitors will have the opportunity to access hundreds of private studios and venues free of charge. They will receive printed maps to enhance their experience, making navigation easier. Highlights of the event include extended hours at the TI Art Studio and a special performance and closing party on the evening of the 20th at the Tappeto Volante Gallery. Additionally, a guided tour of seven community murals will be offered.
Xiangjie Rebecca Wu, one of the participating artists, shared her thoughts on her work, which explores “memory, time, and contemplation.” She remarked, “The images and objects in my paintings encapsulate moments in ordinary life that often go unnoticed yet are profoundly significant. My work reflects my childhood memories filled with both hardship and freedom, rooted in the landscapes of the Yangtze River countryside.”
The Gowanus Open Studios will run from 12 PM to 6 PM on both days, covering the area between Pacific Street and 19th Street, as well as Smith Street to Fifth Avenue. For more information, interested attendees can visit artsgowanus.org.
