Nicaragua cuts diplomatic ties with Israel amid accusations of fascism

On October 11, Nicaragua announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Israel amidst ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has persisted for over a year. The Nicaraguan government has condemned Israel, labeling its actions as “fascism” and accusing it of committing “genocide.”

According to reports from Reuters and the Israeli Times, the Nicaraguan Parliament passed a resolution on the same day, urging the government to take a stand given the approaching anniversary of the Gaza war. A statement from the Nicaraguan government cited Israel’s attacks on Palestine, with the conflict now spreading to Lebanon and posing serious threats to Syria, Yemen, and Iran.

Nicaraguan Vice President Rosario Murillo expressed strong condemnation of the Israeli government, alleging that it is engaged in acts of genocide. She stated, “Our break with Israel is not only relevant to our own people; as global citizens and part of the human family, we love and respect all communities around the world.”

Murillo emphasized, “The fascism and genocide perpetrated by Israel are harming great, brave, and dignified peoples, committing war crimes… We denounce fascism, we reject it, and we stand in solidarity with the people.”

Reports suggest that this diplomatic rupture is largely symbolic, as Israel does not maintain an embassy in Nicaragua’s capital, Managua.
